A question of labelling

01 September 2007

Do you still undertake basic and laborious panel building tasks such as plate engraving? You could save yourself time and money by going the DIY route, according to Liz Gallagher of the engraved plate replacements (EPREP) specialist, Brady

Traditions have their valued place in any skilled industry, but there comes a time when traditional methods, no matter how tried and tested, become cost centres in terms of both time and expenditure. Take engraved plates as an example; for any number of reasons, varying from natural disaster to illness, there is always the possibility of a break in the supply chain and a possible delay. Combine this with the time element involved with faxing an order, explaining exact specifications and needs and standing over the fax machine waiting for communication back from the other party, and an ability to handle and produce the work yourself would present a very attractive proposition.

Analysing the problems and hurdles that a modern day panel-builder must overcome drew Brady to the conclusion that there must be an easier way and so the company has specifically targeted the needs of panel-builders to achieve a more modern method of maintaining the time-honoured highest standards already established within the UK industry.

Liz Gallagher is one of Brady's dedicated product experts and explains the rationale behind the analysis of a panel-builder's workload, "Panel-builders have always been good customers of Brady so what we wanted to present was a way in which levels of skill and professionalism could naturally be maintained, while bringing the benefits of the technology available in 2007 to make life a little easier!"

To tackle the engraved plate issue, engraved plate replacement (EPREP) labels are available, designed to replace traditional engraved and potted plates, "I was with a customer the other day who was telling us it took over four hours to engrave a panel with four lines of text," continues Liz, "The EPREP could be completed in less than a minute, and then stored to be used again as and when required, as it's possible to produce serialised groups of labels using pre-defined templates both standard and non-standard." With a wide temperature range from -40° to +100°C, the EPREP is also designed to be solvent-, UV- and chemical-resistant, along with the famous 'stick and stay' guarantee that the company has made its own.

A further advantage to the use of EPREP is its compatibility with the TLS2200, a portable handheld printer which, in addition to its ability to handle the plate replacement identification, is also a veritable panel-building assistant due to its ability to accept sequences of cabling code, which means that only one set of sequence numbers has to be entered - a time-saver if the same set of cabling needs to be repeated. It also presents assistance whatever environment you need to work in, whether with cables within an underground railway, outdoors away from an accessible power supply, or within a restricted space. "There's always a resistance to change," explains Liz, "any customers who have adopted the Brady method have been quick to recoup the initial set up cost and that's without taking the significant time savings into consideration; we'd just like panel builders to look at what they have at the moment, look at what we can offer them and see if what we say doesn't make a great deal of sense!"
