‘Push-In’ connection technology - wiring without tools03 May 2010Phoenix Contact’s PIT (Push-In Technology) range of DIN rail terminal blocks, which was unveiled last year, has now been extended to accommodate even larger conductor cross-sections of up to 6mm2 solid or 4mm2 stranded wire with ferruleThe extended range of Push-In Technology (PIT) DIN rail mounting terminal blocks from Phoenix Contact now includes feed-through, multi-level, multi-conductor terminals, as well as component and disconnect terminals. The company has been at pains to ensure that the fuse and function terminals of these new products have the same profile as the standard feed-through terminals.
With PIT terminal blocks, conductors can be directly connected without need for tools. As the conductor is inserted, the contact spring opens automatically, resulting in less physical strain on the hand and fingers when connecting. With insertion forces 50% lower than spring cage terminals, it has never been easier to insert a conductor and establish a contact.
The high contact forces exceed those stipulated by the relevant standards and ensure that a high-quality, reliable conductor contact is made.
The conductor is removed by simply pressing the newly designed actuator, which can be depressed with any screwdriver or similar tool. This transfers the release force to the inner contact spring, which is then opened to its maximum extent. The orange colour clearly identifies the actuator, preventing wiring mistakes. Smaller stranded conductors from 0.34mm2 can also be easily inserted by depressing the actuator first.
PIT terminals are 100% touch proof with no direct contact to live parts, so cables can be disconnected whilst live, if required.
PIT is part of the Clipline complete system, which includes interchangeable connection technologies and standardised accessories such as plug-in bridges, marking and testing accessories.
PIT was among 2,000 new products launched at Hannover Fair last month. The innovative technology has also been incorporated in other Phoenix Contact products, including PLC relays and Axioline, the new Realtime I/O system for the control cabinet, which is believed to be the first of its kind on the market.
The PLC Interface relay system has been established in the market for many years and offers a wide variety of coupling relays for PLC connections to various types of I/O (sensors, actuators and so on). It is now offered with all the benefits of PIT.
If you missed the PIT Hannover launch, you can catch up at the Drives & Controls show (NEC Birmingham, June 8 - 10 2010) where it will be featured on the Phoenix Contact stand (D3624). The company invites visitors to come and try it and see just how easy a job it makes of cabinet wiring.
